Major sleep disorders in children and adolescents
Infantile apnea / snoring
These are respiratory disorders that affect children. Infantile apnea is characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep, while snoring is a noise produced by partial obstruction of the upper airway. These disorders can affect sleep quality and child development.
Childhood insomnia due to incorrect habits
It affects 20-30% of the child population, from 6 months to 5 years of age. It is characterized by difficulty falling asleep autonomously and/or frequent nocturnal awakenings during the night with inability to fall back to sleep without external help.
Learned insomnia
It is the natural evolution of Childhood Insomnia due to Incorrect Habits (IHI). Due to a persistence of deterioration in poor sleep habit. They have difficulty falling asleep on their own and multiple nighttime awakenings. It is called Learned Insomnia and is seen in 14% of children.
Parasomnias in children
Abnormal behaviors or abnormal experiences during sleep. These may include nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking, talking or screaming during sleep, bruxism (teeth grinding) and enuresis (bedwetting). These parasomnias are common in childhood and usually resolve over time.
